General Statement
The mainstream, elite media has likened Barack Obama to Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, Jr., and Martin Luther King, Jr. For President Obama to be ranked among these individuals places him in a legendary category. Despite criticisms, the press is not in the wrong for its coverage of the inauguration. For many, Obama is a manifestation of their aspirations and all that is right (and progressive) about themselves and the nation. News outlets such as The New York Times and The Washington Post are merely reflecting the real sentiments of a population which overwhelming supports and venerates its 44th president of the United States.

I think your anaylsis of the news coverage is correct, but the media plays an important role. When the founding fathers debated our government they wanted the press to be an unofficial branch of government to be the ultimate tool of check and balances. The media had enormous power in a republican representative democracy.
